Rites of Passage - Game Script Is it still relevant?

Background

The upcoming prom is the only thing you really care about at this point in your school career. Everyone is busy trying to find a date, what to wear, how the night will pan out, and how they are going to feel in that moment...

To your great surprise Mrs. O’Neil, your beloved teacher, has given you one final task.

"You didn’t think I would let you go without one final mission?" she asked laughing. “I have prepared a unique experience for you... you will participate in a Skype video conference with teenagers around the world that are experiencing different rites of passage. Your task is to listen, understand, share and learn so that you can submit a short argumentative essay answering an essential question, “Is it still relevant in the 21st century, to practice rites of passage ceremonies?” What are the pros and cons? This is a unique opportunity to understand the broader implications and meanings behind rites of passage and also, to debate this issue with other young people worldwide.”

Dear Monica,

you need to convince the panel that tradition is not always important to keep. Somethings should adjust to the changing times, furthermore, maturity is not necessarily chronological, it is often an individual process.

Scene 1: Which rites of passage are still relevant today?

1.

Public Message

This is strange to skype with people you do not know... Mrs O'Neil said that by the end of the day you need to submit an essay and argue whether the rite of passage are still relevant. This is an opportunity to develop your arguments and counterarguments with other young people that have different perspectives on the subject.

To break the ice you might start by introducing yourselves to each other. Tell them about yourself: who you are, where you come from, what your family traditions are like, and what ceremony or ritual you are about to experience.

2.

Private (Shortly After previous message)

Monica:

Based on the resources given, You should explain that some traditions should not be kept since they are no longer relevant  today's world. Tradition can set us back instead of helping us move forwards.
