Assimilation Vs. Integration - Game Script Social Integration

Background

Hello Friends,

You look around and you do not recognize the place you are at. Take a look at the pictures in your resources. You are located in a "Mabara" (מעברה), a place where new immigrants were housed upon arriving to Israel in the '1950s'.

There are hundreds of tents and shacks surround you. The heavy rain from last night left mud everywhere. People from various backgrounds are all around you, some look happy, others look sad, and all look lost. They speak a mixture of foreign languages such as Moroccan, Polish, Romanian, Iraq and Latino, making it difficult for them to communicate with each other. It’s a frustrating scene.

Welcome to the year 1949. You are here, in the transit camp.

זה משחק תפקידים. כל אחד  ואחת יקבל דמות אותה הוא ישחק. קראו את החומר, זה יסייע לכם.

Today's debate concerns social integration, specifically:' multiculturalism vs. assimilation (melting pot) - two different approaches used all over the world to handle immigration.

Your Task

You know that the challenges that lie ahead are grand. Immigrants are basically starting their lives from scratch. They'll have to learn a new language, new traditions, and get along with people from different cultures. The best solution for this lies in the "melting pot" approach. You think that we must be a unified society, with one language and one culture, and for this, the past must be left behind.

בהצלחה!

Scene 1: Assimilation VS. Integration

1.

Public Message

Hello friends,
You have a unique opportunity to go back in time and to live in the 1950's again. We hope you read your resources. The approach to integrating immigrants to Israeli society, at that time, was based on the 'melting pot' approach. The idea was for newcomers to bury their identity and adopt a new "Israeli" one.  While this was great for some of the newcomers it was troubling for others. Your character either supports this approach or believes that it is wrong, and that society should be built on multiculturalism.

Explain to the others in detail your point of view. Use your resources to back up your argument.

Good Luck!

שולה ורשבסקי:

You are now familiar with both methods, and are not sure which one you support. Help the others understand the Hebrew words for:

New immigrants

Melting pot

Multiculturalism

בהצלחה!

אלי דהאן:

You strongly believe that the one's past must be recognized and used as a foundation for one's future.  Explain why it is so important in your view. Read your resources and use them for your arguments.

Make sure to include one sentence in Hebrew in your argument.

בהצלחה!

הרב יחזקאל:

For you, it is all about tradition. Without tradition, Jews would have not been able to persevere through their challenging past. You see that the beauty and building blocks of this new society must be rooted in the mosaic of cultures and traditions that surround it.

Include a word in Hebrew in your argument, and explain its importance.

בהצלחה!

מוטקה ישראלי:

You're actually ready to forget the past. Your experience in the Holocaust has led you to this point. Forgetting the past and creating a new identity sounds extremely appealing to you. Israel is the perfect place to do this now, and it is your chance to become a true Israeli - equal, strong, proud, and confident. The "melting pot" approach is very appealing to you. Use your resources to explain why.

Write the following in Hebrew:

"Hechalutz, Israeli, Kibbutzim"

בהצלחה!

קלמן גורביץ:

You think it's an impossible task to create a healthy society from the abundance of different cultures and traditions that surround you. The best way for the future is to create a melting pot, where everyone adopts a new identity, one that will unite all.

In your argument, include the following words in Hebrew:

"maabara", waves of immigrations, culture, language"

בהצלחה!

3.

Public Message (a while after previous message)

Friends, chaos and turmoil are starting to show in the camp.
Immigrant families are protesting sending their children to a religious school, claiming that while their families are traditional, they are not religious. They also don't identify with the Ashkenazi form of Judaism that the school practices, since they come from an Eastern Jewish culture.

What do you think?

4.

Private (a while before next message)

שולה ורשבסקי:

You are a Hebrew teacher. Find a word or phrase in each of your colleagues' posts and ask them to translate it to Hebrew.

אלי דהאן:

Hebrew is a difficult language, and imagine how hard it will be to pass the law exams are required of you to practice law in Israel. Maybe you should move your family to an Iraqi neighborhood, where they'll be able to maintain their status and respect. The melting pot is not a good idea for you!

הרב יחזקאל:

You heard that they teach them Yiddish phrases in schools and that their rabbi's disrespect your form of Judaism. Are there many different forms to practice Judaism? Why is it important to maintain this large variety?

מוטקה ישראלי:

You heard that, soon, they'll be moving you to a development town that's mostly made up of immigrants. You don't want to move there. You want to be integrated into Israeli society, and have locals as your neighbors. You want to assimilate as quickly as possible.

Speak up!

קלמן גורביץ:

You don't know what all the fuss is about. If they would have immigrated to Germany, France, or the United states, they would have lived in Jewish neighborhoods, and nobody would've complained. We do our best to integrate them, they should be thankful.

Tell the others of the challenges that you face and of the grand opportunities that lie ahead.

5.

Public Message (a while before next message)

It is natural to have isagreement between you... Debate about the immigration and absorption practices that have been going on for many years in many countries.
Select a figure that you least agree with, and try to convince them of your point of view.

6.

Public Message (Shortly Before next message)

The game is almost over, this is your last chance to try to convince the others.
