When Bich Thuy Became the Top Scorer, I Understood Vietnam Women's Volleyball Has a Problem

There is one image I kept after signing off that night. Bich Thuy stood at position 3, dropped her body after a successful quick attack, and almost no one in the stands applauded. Not because the play was ugly. But because at a women's volleyball arena, people clap when an outside hitter punches through the block. When a middle blocker becomes the leading scorer, that is no longer a good play. That is an indictment. I sat in the Nagoya newsroom, reviewing footage of the entire season. Outside the window, February snow fell very slowly. Inside, a team did not cry. The ball does not cry, but the storyteller does. At 58, I no longer remember scorelines. I remember the scorer's face. And I remember that this year those faces looked more tired than last year. The record needs no embellishment. At the AVC Cup, Vietnam was blocked from the final for the first time in three years, finishing third. At the SEA V.Cup, they survived stage one, then collapsed 0-3 in stage two. At the Asian Championship, a single win. At the Asiad, seventh place while the public target was a semifinal. Four arenas, four vectors pointing one way. In volleyball, the unity of the direction is worth more than any single number. The loss list is more telling than the win list. Losing to China, Japan and South Korea is expected. But losing to Indonesia twice, to the Philippines, to Kazakhstan — that is the kind of defeat that does not belong to Southeast Asia's clear number two. And I noticed this: the original commentary, however critical, also admitted those opponents have improved. Vietnam's decline is both absolute and relative. The clearest anatomical point is not in the scoreline. All year, positions 2 and 4 almost always met the block. That is a technical description, but it carries a diagnosis. In an Asian quick system, the middle is the threat that frees the wings. When the middle becomes the escape valve, the structure has inverted. That happens when the setter and the setter-to-wing connection have broken. A ball at position 4 is not blocked for lack of power. It is blocked because it is slow. Because it was read early. Because the setter could not accelerate the offense to split a two-player block. Bich Thuy kept scoring on quick attacks. That means reception was still functional enough to feed position 3. Yet the wings stayed shut. So the problem lies in wing quality and in distribution, not in pure ball control. Now comes the forgotten part. Across an entire season, not one positive individual data point was ever raised. Only Tran Thi Thanh Thuy with 36 points and a vague phrase: "rather low efficiency." No denominator. For Thanh Thuy, that price is measurable. She plays for Gunma Green Wings in Japan. Then VTV Binh Dien Long An. Then the national team from January, four tournaments in a row. A player grinding continuously from October to September is not rated as low-efficiency. She is being drained. Nguyen Thi Trinh was absent for family reasons.
