Olympiacos and an Unripened Autumn: Bartzokas Talks Integration, Not System

Three times the ball caromed off the Olympiacos rim on Red Star Belgrade's final possession. Three live balls, and three times no red-and-white hand closed in time. The friendly in Cyprus ended the way no coach wants to retell it. I rewatched the tape several times, not to hunt for technical errors, but to listen to the footsteps. The footsteps of a team that has not yet learned each other do not lie. Where the ball rolls, the story begins.

Context: a roster that assembled late

Olympiacos entered the Neofytos Chandriotis friendly tournament in Cyprus against Red Star Belgrade in the middle of pre-season, at a point when, by Giorgos Bartzokas' own account, official games are already close through the EuroLeague Super Cup. In the post-game press conference he was blunt: “We are not ready, we are running for team level.”

The backdrop deserves a careful read. Sasha Vezenkov is back in the jersey, but this was his first game with his teammates, on one and a half training sessions and a sore hand. Tyler Dorsey sat out for rest and will return Sunday against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Two new guards, Codi Miller-McIntyre and Jean Montero, are still finding their footing. Per the club's pre-season data, Olympiacos carries the most internationals in the EuroLeague — ten. Ten passports, ten basketball cultures, and two or three shared practices.

Every contract is an unspoken sentence. Unspoken sentences are paid for in time.

What Bartzokas is actually describing

Red Star shot 70 percent on two-pointers and 60 percent on three-pointers for a large part of the game. I do not read that as a statement about Serbian firepower. Based on my experience watching EuroLeague pre-season friendlies, shooting splits like these do not survive a week — they exist because the shooter was left open, not because the offense reached maturity.

Bartzokas narrated the collapse in the order a European coach narrates it: sluggish defense, no ball pressure, opposing ball-handlers finding court vision, passes travelling untouched, shooters standing completely open, and confidence compounding possession by possession. He named “cooperation,” “focus,” “intensity,” and one very European cue — “hands not on the ball.”

In European basketball, “hands not on the ball” is not about marking. It is about jumping passing lanes, digging into contests in the middle of the floor, making the opponent think before releasing the pass. When all three disappear at once, what breaks first is the point of attack — where defense begins and where it dies. For a system that lives on pressure and switching, that is the most fatal of all failures.

Read together, the Vezenkov thread and the shooting thread form a fairly clear picture. Vezenkov “was not good,” yet he was decisive with an and-one and a transition three. One and a half practices, a sore hand, a first game with new teammates — the “not good” verdict is confounded by too many variables to be read as a form signal. What is worth noting is that he still touched the ball at the right moment, still stood in the right place when the game needed someone to take responsibility.

The counterintuitive angle: the blind spot of collective memory

The collective memory of the hardwood will record this Cyprus game with one word: weak. A week later, when Olympiacos opens the season, people will forget Red Star shot 70 and 60 percent in a friendly, and that the Greek side had two or three shared practices. Collective memory tends to record the score and erase the context.

In the other direction, Bartzokas himself sets a limit on his own “not ready” story when he says no team is ready and that this is the reality for all of them. On the calendar, he is right: a roster with ten internationals must reassemble late, and the price is compressed practice time. But that sentence has an expiry date. The EuroLeague Super Cup is the first official game, and there, a loss will be read as crisis and a win as title form. Both readings are traps.

What matters is not the friendly scoreline but whether Olympiacos can patch the point of attack before the ball counts. If the new backcourt cannot rebuild that pressure zone, everything else — Vezenkov, Dorsey, the new SEF arena with season tickets sold in advance — stays surface-level.
