Empty data rooms and the fairness problem in Vietnamese sport

I sat at the screen at 2 a.m. The match report sent to the analysis room was empty: no player names, no technical data, no situation to review. For fans, this was an unremarkable sports night. For me, it was a clear signal overlooked by the stands: if we do not have reliable data, we will never know whether we saw the real match or merely a story built from emotion. I thought about a sentence I often use: there are offside mistakes nobody sees, but the camera never blinks. A camera can record everything, yet it cannot make a decision by itself. The person behind the screen must take responsibility. A VAR room full of equipment but without a data-review process is like a referee blowing the whistle with closed eyes. Based on my experience following matches in Vietnam, the problem is not the number of cameras. Since the 2026 season, VAR has been piloted in V.League under the roadmap of VFF and VPF. Matches are filmed from multiple angles and referees can review situations on screen. What I see less often is a consistent system for storing and publishing data. When a controversial moment happens, spectators receive only the final decision; the intermediate frames, the signals from the VAR room and the slow-motion checks usually vanish from the story. Since January 2026, the ATP Tour has fully adopted the electronic line-calling system. Hawk-Eye, a technology born in tennis and used by the ATP since 2026, has now replaced most line judges at major events. This decision did not come from human weakness. It came from a biological limit: a serve travelling at nearly 200 km/h can hit the court and leave it within a few milliseconds. The human eye cannot keep up with that speed. Machines can. Technology does not remove the role of humans. One millimetre can change the fate of a team; I have learned to live with that. In tennis, whether a ball touches the line can decide an entire tournament. In football, an offside error of 0.3 metres can alter a final. Technology gives us evidence, but it does not give us agreement. Agreement only comes when everyone looks at the same data set and accepts the same procedure. I once sat in the VAR room and failed to spot a handball in the penalty area. Nobody saw my mistake at that moment, but I saw it at 2 a.m., after everyone had gone home. I reviewed every frame, noted every error and asked myself: are we too quick to turn an ambiguous moment into a definite answer? In sport, sometimes the most honest answer is simply: not enough evidence. Admitting your own limit does not weaken a match. It makes the system more truthful. Fans often hate waiting in front of the screen. They hate a whistle that interrupts the rhythm. They hate long silent pauses while the referee listens to the headset. I understand that feeling. But I also understand that a wrong conclusion after three seconds is worse than a correct conclusion after thirty seconds. The biggest mistake is not holding the whistle; it is being afraid to own your own call. The referee is the only person on the field not allowed to choose a side, and analysts must also learn to stand in that position. The article I received today had no input data. I could write an inspired commentary based on memory, but I choose not to. A valuable sports analysis must begin by accepting the shortage, not by hiding it. If an analysis room has no data, the writer’s job is not to invent a story. The job is to show that the system is missing an important link. From my perspective, Vietnamese sport is heading in the right direction by accepting VAR and modern measuring tools. But real progress is not about having more cameras or algorithms. Progress means daring to publish data, allowing the public to audit the process and correcting mistakes when they are found. A sustainable sports culture needs more than beautiful victories. It needs a system fair enough that no one has to sit alone at 2 a.m. looking for an answer that should have been stored from the start. When everyone blames a 19-year-old player, the person in the VAR room must stand up. When everyone praises a beautiful move, the analyst must look at the frame before it. There are details the crowd never sees, but they still exist. I find them at 2 a.m., after everyone has gone home, and I write about them so the match can protect itself. Technology is never the final answer. Technology is only a mirror reflecting the responsibility of those standing behind the system.
