They have millions of data points about things that do not matter, and not one about the thing that decides.

This is why I am cautious with heat maps and beautiful charts. In football analysis I have said that the heat map has become a new form of divination: it hides a player's actual role in the tactical system behind a persuasive visual. In table tennis the risk is even greater, because the sport has many movement variables and very few instruments to measure them.

So I must reframe the question: is what we lack data, or questions?

I think the answer is both, but in a specific order. The question must come first. A federation should not begin by buying a statistics system. It should begin by sitting down and writing out three questions it genuinely wants answered within three years. For example: why do our players lose effectiveness in deciding sets? Why is injury rate high in the seventeen-to-twenty age band? Why do some institutional units consistently produce players while others do not?

Each such question will itself point to the data needed. And more importantly, it will show that the volume of data required is far smaller than people assume.

On the no-red-flags trap, I want to push one step further. In a system that does not measure, confidence is a sign of ignorance, not of safety. A federation without a risk report is not a federation without risk. A national team without injury data is not a healthy team. And a table tennis nation without data on decisive-point failures is not a nation of nerve.

After seven years, I believe in the silence between two numbers. But I must also admit: for a silence to mean anything, there must first be two numbers. And we are missing both.

TAKEAWAY — SIGNALS TO WATCH

Vietnamese table tennis does not lack talent, does not lack fans, and does not lack will. It lacks a nervous system.

Three signals I will watch in the coming cycle. First, whether any national tournament begins publishing point-by-point data publicly, even as a raw file. That is the cheapest signal with the widest reach. Second, whether any institutional unit begins publishing young athletes' development pathways year by year, with performance indicators. That is a signal that the system is starting to think in long cycles. Third, whether within three years any Vietnamese player under twenty appears regularly in the main draw of continental events. That is the only signal that the talent pipeline is genuinely working.

And the question I leave behind: if in ten years we still do not have point-by-point data for a single national championship, is it because we lack resources, or because we do not want to know the answer?

I do not have the answer. But I know how to find it, and finding it does not cost much. It costs one decision.
